Summer Adventures Await in BrunswickCounty

One of Ocean Isle Beach's most unique summer traditions recently returned as the Ocean Isle Beach Sea Turtle Protection Organization hosted its annual Sit-A-Thon, bringing together residents and visitors for a fun-filled fundraiser benefiting local sea turtle conservation efforts.

The event challenged participants to remain seated in their beach chairs as the tide slowly crept closer and closer. While it may sound simple, the rising water—and plenty of laughs—made for an entertaining afternoon as competitors held on for the chance to be one of the last participants remaining.

More importantly, the Sit-A-Thon helps raise funds that directly support the organization's mission of protecting sea turtles that nest along the shores of Ocean Isle Beach each summer. Volunteers dedicate countless hours to monitoring nests, educating beachgoers, assisting injured
turtles, and helping protect these incredible animals throughout nesting season.

Events like the Sit-A-Thon not only raise needed funds but also help bring the community together in support of one of Brunswick County's most treasured natural resources.

Nesting typically occurs after dark, and hatchlings emerge naturally when conditions are right. Always give turtles plenty of space, avoid using flashlights or flash photography, and follow any instructions provided by sea turtle volunteers.

Simple actions like filling in holes, removing beach equipment at the end of the day, and turning off beachfront lights at night all help protect nesting turtles and hatchlings.
