Officials Activate Enhanced Monitoring as Freezing Rain and Cold Temperatures Approach |
Brunswick County is on high alert as forecasts predict a significant winter storm this weekend, bringing freezing rain and dangerously low temperatures to the region.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington anticipates light rain on Friday, transitioning to a wintry mix on Saturday, particularly affecting inland areas. Coastal regions may experience cold rain through Sunday.
In response, county officials have activated Level 3 – Enhanced Monitoring to coordinate with community partners and ensure public safety.
Residents are urged to stay informed through multiple channels, including the ReadyBrunswick emergency notification system, local news outlets, and NOAA weather radios.
To assist those in need, Brunswick County has partnered with local organizations to provide warming shelters during the cold snap.
Brunswick Christian Recovery Centers will accommodate both men and women. They can be reached at 910.287.4357.
Brunswick Partnership for Housing will serve families with children, elderly residents, and individuals with health issues who cannot stay in congregate settings. Contact them at 910.946.1499.
Additionally, Brunswick County Animal Protective Services is offering assistance to pet owners by loaning crates, bedding, and straw to help bring pets indoors during the cold weather. Residents needing this support should contact Animal Protective Services at 910.754.8204 by Friday, Jan. 23.
Safety recommendations include checking smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, protecting water systems from freezing, and reporting any power outages to your electric provider promptly.
